The 1290 better for the former and the 890 better for the latter. I've rode to Banff, from OR to TN, and done most of the WA, OR, and MABDRs on my 1290 SAR and had no real wants of a lighter bike other than the fact that it'd obviously make it easier. The 1290 KTM has noticeably more power everywhere, feels lighter and handles better. Engine is not as smooth (obviously) As for reliability my mates tiger had new ecu, new cylinder head and new final drive before it reached 5000 miles, another mates 675 threw a valve down the bore at 20,000 miles.
